The reputation of this elusive and somewhat stoic vigneron spread quickly, as his style was easily recognizable as far superior to the growing trend of innocuous, somewhat uniform Chardonnay. He worked for eight years in the food industry. Then, after harvesting for a couple of years at Domaine Alain Burguet in Gevrey-Chambertin as of 1996, became inspired and motivated to embark on his own estate project, and so enrolled at the wine institute in Beaune. In 2002, he bought his first vineyard plot (a miniscule 0.05 hectares!) and carried out his own vinification that September. Since then, Jérôme expanded the holdings to five hectares of vines and harvests every year with a group of well-trained friends.

Vinification takes place in a small winery at his home. His goal is terroir transparency. Viticulture is organic for 70% of the vineyards and sustainable for 30%. No pesticides, all vines are plowed. Some whole cluster inclusion, delicate vinification. All wines are aged in oak barrels - 12 months for whites, 18 to 24 months for reds. Jérôme’s wines are precise, refined and elegant, beautifully perfumed, positively delicious. Recent findings indicate that the spot was a settlement practicing viticulture as early as Roman times. Named Karthäuserhof, or “Farm of the Carthusians,” it was founded officially as a Carthusian monastery in the 11th century. In 1811, Napoleon secularized the region and the property was auctioned off in Paris. It was bought by Valentin Leonardy and, miraculously, through the trials and tribulations of over 200 years, has remained in the same family. The Tyrells inherited Karthäuserhof in the mid-20th century with their eldest son, Christoph, running all operations in the vineyard and cellar until 2012. 2015 marked the beginning of a new period in the estate’s history, as Ludwig Breiling, the legendary winemaker behind the successful 1990s and outstanding vintages of 2000 – 2009, returned from his absence to oversee all work in the winery and vineyards. To complete his dream team, he called upon Sascha Dannhäuser to take on the role of head winemaker. In addition to working alongside Ludwig for over 20 years, Dannhäuser was a key asset to Christian Vogt during his tenure at the estate. The single-vineyard estate makes wines exclusively from the Karthäuserhofberg vineyard. They use no pesticides, instead preferring pheromones, which prevent insect pests from reproducing. The 19 hectares of vineyards are planted almost entirely to Riesling on original rootstock. While the estate produces the classic Prädikat wines, they have long been ahead of the curve and renowned for their dry Rieslings, an area of increasing popularity among Riesling lovers. In fact, the majority of their production is dry wines, including a Grosses Gewächs that was introduced with the 2009 vintage.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0756/9421/1291/files/IMG_1343_f2f44cb5-f0c6-4491-b5a3-3ff7f145b20e.jpg?v=1761172913
2022-comtes-lafon-monthelie-1er-cru-les-duresses-rouge
2022 Comtes Lafon Monthélie 1er Cru 'Les Duresses' Rouge

The harvest is all done by hand, and the grapes are sorted twice—once in the vineyards and again at the winery. Their vines average 32 years. Traditional, natural fermentations are the hallmark of the domaine. Native yeasts, slow fermentations and long élévages allow the wines to express the complexity and nuance of each terroir. The Chardonnays are pressed gently and undergo a cool settling of the must for 24 hours before the juice is racked into both new and lightly-used oak barrels. Alcoholic fermentations last for three months, kept at a cool 22 to 24°C in their underground cellars. The whites are generally stirred on their lees, depending on the cuvee, and then undergo malolactic fermentation, which ends in May following the harvest. The whites are bottled unfiltered 18 to 22 months after the harvest. The Pinot Noirs are mostly de-stemmed to encourage the best expression of the fruit. Alcoholic fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks, with two daily punch-downs for about 12 days. At that point, both the free-run and direct-press wines are assembled and left to settle for two weeks. The reds are then racked by gravity into oak barrels, one-third of which are new. Malolactic fermentation begins late for the reds and generally occurs between March and May, after which the cuvees are racked back into their original barrels. Like the whites, the reds are bottled 18 to 22 months following the harvest.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0756/9421/1291/files/StockPhoto_41624151-d39c-4875-a268-f778f85168b3.webp?v=1773504420
nv-krug-grand-cuvee-172nd-edition-brut-1
NV Krug Grand Cuvée '172nd Edition' Brut (Gift Box)

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate.
